YESTERDAY WAS SUNDAY

yesterday was Sunday
and the dogs did not bark
only in the town
did the lanterns
burn bright circles
into the evening
the pavement slid
in age-old script
past the helpless houses
yesterday was Sunday
and the dogs did not bark
the old trumpet
in the bar under the bridge
smelled of gold
the tired trumpeter
drank the shimmering tones
as the young people danced
till he drowned in his tinny song
yesterday was Sunday
and the dogs did not bark
in the church old women
mumbled
and regretted
that their bodies no longer sounded
like ardent guitar strings
of days gone by
but they pretended
that their whispered prayers
were like the sublime gilded Buddha
in the antique shop
around the corner
yesterday was Sunday
and the dogs did not bark
because
seven candles prayed
hallelujah
