AS USUAL…

(a morning in contemporary Mesopotamia)
dawn has a promising smile
footprints that will not last
early prayers
shouting soldiers
shadows
silence
donkeys cross the road
first light brightens up
sun takes off from the horizon
people chatter,
blether,
squabble
kids call out
babies scream
car noise
dogs bark
silence
a blast
a big bang
explosion
like every single day
at different times
limbs, body parts, blood
voices, piercing, stabbing voices
while the sun slowly rises
in camouflaged composure
with its rays
ceaselessly wiping the hopeless screaming
off the day’s early face
sirens start to howl
and shadows condense
while human arms are cutting air
in vain
and flooded eyes in despair
lose their gaze
dogs-bark
weave into the human roar
fade
sun moves slowly higher
as usual
warming the morning air
gilding the wreckage
and the cooling blood mud
gilding the wagging dog tails
and the hapless faces of soldiers
gilding the distorted faces
of others who run and scream
and the emptied faces of the dismembered
dead ones
still lying on sacred dusty soil
torn
forlorn
in a bed of absent silence
that has yet to return
in the end
all gets carried away
dragged and brushed
washed and hidden away
purged, erased and the lid put on
but the echoes
of every moment’s cagey past
reverberate
live on
